Cool toy to have around, not worth the asking price Oct 24, 2010
By Drunkenmarauder I've recently come back from a trip to Beijing, China, and chanced upon this chess set at an outdoor market. The kit is light and the figurine pieces are the best part of the set, with good overall aesthetic quality to them, though the material used doesn't seem very special. The box itself seems to be made of fairly inexpensive wood, and is not all too pretty to look at; I haven't tested it out in any prolonged travel settings, as it is a tad chunkier than your average travel chess set. All in all, I'd say that this is a pleasing and unique looking chess set to own and play with. As for the 'hand crafted' claim, there were almost too many vendors selling the same sets. But it may still be handcrafted, seeing as manual labor is supposed to be very cheap in the country.
HOWEVER! BUYER BEWARE! At the marketplace I went to, the asking price was 210rmb (~$30), which was easily dropped to 120rmb (~$18) with a bit of haggling. An experienced wordsmith with a silver tongue could probably get an even better deal. I would recommend that, before purchasing any 'exotic' toys such as this, you do a bit of research.
