Scenes of flowers and birds are exquisitely rendered and intricately hand-carved in subtly colored, raised jade and Qingtian stonework on three of the sides of this original artisan creation. These sides alternate with the three sides that are delicately hand-painted with vibrant floral arrays. Each side's design is enwrapped in a hand-painted golden border while hand-painted water foliage adorns the table's skirt. In concert with traditional Chinese artisan techniques, "tongfen" or bronze powder has been added to the paint to provide extra gleam. The white petals which border the top are an intricate floral pattern of ivy and plumb blossoms, created from delicately hand-inlaid Mother of Pearl. The eye-catching, hand-painted red design on the top surface is a stylized version of the "lingzhi" plant, an ingredient in an ancient immortality elixir, and also known as "the plant of life." This plant is part of a group "precious objects" which originated during the Ming dynasty. Multiple applications of lacquer provide the lustrous black base coat.
