This gorgeous piece features a traditional scene in which the women on the large central doors, play music in a courtyard typical of Ming and Qing dynasty nobility. The women are exquisitely rendered in intricately hand-carved and raised jade and Qingtian stonework as are the leaves of the tree above them. The children joyfully playing on the four wide lower drawers are "gui zi tu" or "precious children images," representing the common Chinese idiom "many children, much happiness," and are also created in expertly handcrafted, raised jade and Qingtian stonework. Faces and musical instruments are hand-carved from bone. The white petals which border the doors and drawers are created from delicately inlaid Mother of Pearl and alternate with intricate, hand-painted, floral patterns of "meihua" (plumb blossoms) and "mudanhua" (tree peonies). These same flora grace the side panels, while additional flora are hand-painted on the top, and inside of the doors. Multiple applications of black lacquer provide the lustrous base coat. Gleaming, custom brass hinges and handles adorn the doors and drawers. A peach key latch keeps both doors securely closed while stylized "xi" character handles, representing joy, provide access to the generous interior storage space.
